سمي السفر سفرا لأنه يُسفر عن أخلاق المسافرين ويظهر ما كان خافيا منها.

وهو ثلاثة أقسام:
-سفر طاعة: كحج وعمرة وصلة الرحم
-سفر معصية: كالسفر للفسوق والعصيان
-سفر مباح: كتجارة ونزهة وصيد ونحوها

وكان سفر أسلافنا لطلب المعالي:
تغرَّب عن الأوطان في طلب العلى -- وسافر ففي الأسفار خمس فوائد
تفرُّج هم واكتساب معيشة -- وعلم وآداب وصحبة ماجد
