Binocular Vision
The word binocular comes from two Latin roots bi for double and oculus for eye ،،
Binocular single vision is co-ordination use of the two eyes in order to produce single mental impression ،،
Having two eyes confers at least four advantages over having one:
It gives a creature a spare eye in case in one eye is damaged ،،
It gives a wider field of view ،،
It gives binocular summation in which the ability to detect faint objects is enhanced
It can gives stereopsis in which paralx provided by the two eyes different positions on the head give precise depth perception ،،
Binocular vision is usually accompanied by singleness of vision or binocular fusion in which a single image is seen despite each eyes having it is own images of any object.
Proper functioning of binocular vision without symptoms depends on a number of factors, which can be considered three broad headings:
(i) (The anatomy of visual apparatus.
(ii) (The anatomy of motor system that co-ordinates movement of the eyes.
(iii) (The sensory system through which the brain receives and integrates the two monocular signals.
Anomalies in any of these can cause difficulties in binocular vision or even make it impossible.
These anomalies can be considered in terms of two categories:
Anomalies in which the binocular vision is maintained, but often at the cost of
considerable amount of stress e.g. heterophoria.
Anomalies in which binocular vision is absent.
